I have returned from the dusty Mexican borderlands my hair a shade lighter and my skin several redder (I don’t get darker… at all). And while not all of Rocky Point is as pretty as this, the place I stayed with my parents was pretty damned gorgeous.
Oooooh, pretty…. |
Seriously, how pretty is this?

But we managed to meet up for late night burritos with my siblings (one of whom had just gotten engaged literally twenty minutes before), see another friend, get some scattered sleep, attend and clean up an engagement/going away party, and start driving south without further incident.
Leaving us free to look forward to how we spend most of our time in Mexico |
Mexico itself was absolutely wonderful, even if we did lose/break a signficant amount of things between the two of us. Namely: one bathing suit (found only on the last day, after a replacement had already been purchased), one skirt (ripped by the Sarah while she was wearing it), one replacement bathing suit (the straps broke off), one climbing man ear cuff (lost whilst banana boating- the best five dollars I have spent in my LIFE), one extra life necklace (lost somewhere in JJ’s), one calligraphy pen (I have no idea where it is), and two partial sets of skin (burned to a crisp, although my sunburn is luckily located only on my back).
But besides for the tricksters nothing went wrong. The border was a cinch to get through, the huge Arizona wildfire didn’t make the slightest of appearances, and there was nothing in the way of the traditional media-scare redheaded Mexican stepchilds (drugs, violence, chihuahuas, actually there may have been one chihuahua). Not that I expected there to be any, I’ve actually never had a bad experience in Rocky Point.
What’s that? Oh right. Time for my public service announcement. *Ahem*
People, you can get shot anywhere- and it’s just as likely you’ll be the victim of violence in parts of the United States. Don’t let the fear of violence keep you away. Go to Mexico. It’s totally worth it.

I’m completely serious. Everyone I met there was nice, the food was amazing (oh how I have missed good Sonoran style Mexican food), the weather was warm and sunny, the culture was old and interesting, things were cheap, and they really really can use our tourism dollars.
Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers were as terrific as always, but they were even better given that I was seeing the concert with my parents and one of my very good friends,* especially as their music usually makes me really miss the southwest and all my family and friends.

Between my companions, the concert, the wonderful weather, and copious amounts of cerveza… it’s lucky I made it back at all. And I may be bruised, battered, sleep deprived, and lacking jewelry, but I’ve soaked up enough sun and music and family to keep me going in the misty north-lands for awhile.
Hasta luego México.
*I still mourn the lack of the third member of our Trifecta, but alas, Heather had to go to a stinking job interview or something like that.
